You were just making your morning coffee… when suddenly the evening came and all your plans, as well as time, slipped through your fingers. Again. Seems familiar? Unfortunately, we all have only 24 hours to manage every day, and if we don’t pay attention to our actions we can accidentally spend time on things that we could have totally skipped. The worst part is that we could have been doing something that we really love or need. So, the question is again, just like in the title – where is all this time? I’m going to try and answer this question, for science! And of course for you 🙂
When we start wondering about the time which we’ve lost, like a General who lost his soldiers in a battle, we should ask ourselves things like: how much TV do I watch? How many times have I lost an hour scrolling Facebook or making Snapchats? These are only a few examples. In real life, you know best what question to ask yourself to find out the truth. Sometimes we are just afraid to take responsibility for our actions. We don’t want to confess to anyone that during the whole day we haven’t done anything constructive. However, there are two sides of this matter. On one hand, we just tend to blame ourselves for hanging out, flipping through a magazine or daydreaming. Remember that no one is perfect. From time to time everyone steps off the productivity trail for a while. And that’s ok! On the other hand, when you are not aware of where are all the moments go you should probably give time tracking a try. It’s a wonderful way to see where did all those hours actually go – is it a party they decided to through on this particular day or maybe they all have been there – you just didn’t notice.Invest your time instead of just spending it. The great challenge of this process is to find out what are your priorities. What really matters to you. I’m not going to give you any hints on that because it’s really personal and someone else’s preferences may never make you happy. Though I want to suggest a way to make you SEE THINGS. You can start with a simple excel spreadsheets, and just like Laura Vanderkam – a time management expert, try to write down all your activities in a half an hour sequences. Buck up for at least a week. When you have everything in a table it will be all clear and organized. Then you can toy around with the idea of changing sth, for example, to have more time for your kids, or to develop your business ideas. Invest your time instead of just spending it! After bringing it to your own attention you should give some time tracking tools a try. They will watch over your time for you!
Too little, too late
From my own experience, I can tell that people who waste the most time are usually the first to complain about having too little of it. So now I want to show you how to kill two birds with one stone and by this I mean do more and have more time. Again I will come back to time tracking. When it comes to work productivity this is your fairy godmother who will mentor you with her magical abilities. As I mentioned before, time tracking helps to analyze your tasks, gather data about your actions, but most importantly it gives you the opportunity to adjust tools that you are using and reevaluate your priorities. Let’s say you notice that you’ve spend 7 hours on writing a report. After seeing this you can instantly learn for the future – to divide the work and pass it to your employees or colleagues or find a different, better way to do it – a method or an app that will have options to save your time.
